Thermal paper is a paper that is coated with color-forming elements to produce an image when heat is transferred. This heat is transferred from the thermal head that is contained in the compact thermal printer. A thermal head consists of a multitude of miniature heating elements distributed along its printing width. Each heating element is electronically controlled to deliver the correct amount of thermal energy to the right place for the right amount of time.

The advantages of thermal printing and thermal receipt paper is its reliability and easy handling in all applications. There are fewer moving parts in the printer and only one consumable being the paper. The maintenance is also low cost and low noise since a non-impact printing process is employed. Some grades of thermal can offer resistance to external substances such as water, oils, adhesives and plasticisers.
