The SPT 1700 is tough enough for manufacturing and industrial uses. Its reinforced housing is designed to withstand drops of up to 4 feet onto concrete. The unit is tested to IP54 standards, which test a unit's protection against dust and water. To obtain IP54 certification, the barcode laser
scanner was subjected to dust and spray water tests. The dust test called for the SPT 1700 to be placed in dust test chamber and subjected to 8 hours of agitation. The spray water test challenged the SPT 1700 to withstand 10 minutes of continuous water flow from 25 different spray nozzles. It was still functional after both tests.
