Barcode CCD Scanners
It's no surprise that hand held barcode CCD scanners are getting faster, smarter, lighter, better and more rugged. Nor is it a surprise that you're getting a lot of added functionality for about the same price as you would have paid for a "plain Jane" scanner just a couple of years ago. These trends have been in force for the past half-dozen years or so.
What is surprising, perhaps, is that the newest trends in
barcode CCD scanner aren't just enhancements of today's scanners - some of them will literally change the way we scan in the near future.
The most noticeable trend is the seemingly sudden emergence (in the U.S., anyway) of charge couple devices (CCDs), not only as a viable scanning option but also one that may become a major factor in the next few years.
Barcode CCD scanner devices are light and rugged, have essentially no moving parts, and use less power than laser diodes. This makes them ideal for use with portable terminals or for integration into hand held data collection devices. But even with some scanners offering an extended reading range (from near contact to almost two feet), they haven't caught on in a big way.

But with many bar code applications moving away from "industrial" conditions and into the field and office, hand held data collection terminals with integrated CCDs, keyboards, memory and displays (that aren't much larger or heavier than most TV remote controls) will become increasingly popular.
The real reason barcode CCD scanners are emerging as a factor in the scanning world today, however, is less because of their ruggedness and low power consumption and more because of the growing interest in two-dimensional symbols. Laser scanners can read stacked bar codes just fine, but matrix symbols are much more problematic. See also small business
